Abstract

This study assessed the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of 211 buffalo farmers in Nueva Ecija regarding the programs implemented by the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) and regarding various aspects of buffalo farming. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to determine the factors influencing farmers’ knowledge level. Results showed that while 43% of the farmers were aware of basic PCC services, like deworming and artificial insemination, awareness of other PCC programs was limited Forty-two percent, 38% and 33%of the farmers have low knowledge levels, particularly on breeding and reproduction, feeds and feeding, and record keeping, respectively, whereas (33%) and (26%) of them have high knowledge levels related to animal health and milking, respectively. Regression analysis showed that herd size and distance from PCC are the factors significantly (p<.05) affecting farmers’ knowledge level. Despite knowledge gaps, the results highlight a positive attitude of the farmers toward the programs of PCC, as well as toward aspects of buffalo farming. The farmers sought information from sources such as PCC technicians, digital platforms, and in-person trainings as the preferred channel of information. These highlight the need for accessible, inclusive, and multi-channel information dissemination strategies to enhance farmers’ knowledge and skills on buffalo production.
