MICROSCOPIC CHARACTERIZATION OF THE PROVENTRICULUS OF THE PHILIPPINE NATIVE CHICKEN (Gallus gallus domesticus)
Abstract
Philipp J Vet Anim Sci 2011, 37 (2): 101-110
A total of twenty apparently healthy free range Philippine native chickens, 10 males and 10 females, were used in the study. Each bird had no history of deworming and vaccination. The proventriculus of each bird was collected in toto and fixed in 10% buffered formalin. The tissue samples were sectioned and stained with Hematoxylin & Eosin, Masson’s trichrome, Periodic Acid Schiff, Alcian Blue pH 1.0 and Weigert’s Hematoxylin. The different layers of the proventricular wall observed were the tunica mucosa, tunica submucosa, tunica muscularis and tunica serosa. Various structures such as collagen fibers, elastic fibers, sulfated mucosubstances and mucin were also observed in the different layers of the proventricular wall. Histologically, the structures of the proventriculus of the Philippine native chicken are very much similar with the structures present in other birds.
